Volunteer Staff Opportunities
Yes,
there are opportunities for volunteers! We are growing every year
and we need help to continue to do so.
In 2010, we expect at least
60 campers, so we'll be looking for 20 counselors (and a camp nurse)
for the week of camp. If you've done the math, you'll have figured
out we maintain a counselor to camper ratio of at least 1:3.
Planning and organizing Camp Quest West is a year-round effort, too.
Camp Counselors
Our volunteers are usually comprised of about 30% parents - we
believe they provide a needed safety perspective. Our past volunteer
staff have been very diverse, including college students, parents and
some retirees who have the time to "just be quiet and listen" to the
youngsters, which really makes a difference.
In 2010, we plan to have 60 boys and girls, ages 8-17. We are
leasing Camp Ross Relles, a residential facility in the foothills of
the Sierras near Nevada City, California, bounded on three sides by
Malakoff Diggins State Historical Park. Camp Counelors volunteer for
the entire week of camp, which is from Sunday, July 11, through
Saturday, July 17, 2009. All staff members must be 18 years of age or
older.
There will be at least two staff orientation conference calls before
camp begins. On Sunday, July 11, there will be a short on-site
orientation for staff at 2:00 p.m. Campers arrive at 4:00 p.m., and
will be picked up before dinner on the following Saturday. Staffers
may leave after that, although we hope they will stay another night to
attend the Staff "Thank You" Party that evening.
Please note that all staff positions are unpaid. There may be a
small budget for reimbursement of travel costs, depending upon
fundraising success. Please let us know if this would be a
consideration for you. Volunteer staff should bring their own sleeping
bags and towels. At camp a bunk, mattress, and meals will be provided.
As a camp counselor, you will sleep in a cabin with at least one
other counselor and up to 8 campers. You will, as part of a team of
counselors, be responsible for the well being of the campers. Your
responsibilities may include facilitating projects, working on
planning committees, serving as a group leader, encouraging Camp Quest
pride, serving as a role model, and participating in all Camp Quest
training. But most importantly, we want you to have FUN and to make
sure that each and every camper has FUN too!
Year Round
Organizing Team
Camp Quest West also has an organizing team that works year-round to
organize camp, and we're always open to interested folks. We're spread
throughout the west, from Seattle (our registrar) to San Diego (our
Marketing Director). We're organized by subcommittees: Operations,
Fundraising/Finance, Marketing, Program, Registration and Staffing.
If this sounds intriguing, I'm sure we could match your interests
somewhere. Give us a call or drop us a line. Applications will be
accepted beginning in February 2010. Click here to
apply online.
